On behalf of the staff of Sacred Heart, I would like to welcome all of you to school. We thank you for your generosity at Christmas time, that was expressed in the way of cards and gifts to staff and donations to our "Giving Tree”. I trust you and your family had a peaceful Christmas break. It is wonderful to be back at school working with your children and sharing in the excitement, energy and joy that they bring with them each and every day.
A number of extracurricular activities have started up at school this week. Thank you for supporting these activities through coaching, refereeing and driving. Although we are just returning to school we are already planning for next year. If you have a child entering kindergarten in the fall, I thank you for completing the Kindergarten Survey for September 2018 (this link was emailed to you yesterday). If you have not had a chance to respond, please do so as soon as you are able.
On a typical school day morning, in the span of 30 minutes, we have over 370 children being dropped off at our school, close to 40 children being dropped off at the preschool and approximately 80 people coming to morning mass. Needless to say, this is a large number of vehicles in a small amount of time. Please review the attached document related to the traffic pattern for drop-off and pick-up. Passing this information on to anyone who may be dropping off or picking up your children would be appreciated. The safety of all in our parish community is of the utmost importance.
Prayer Request: The great grandmother of Abigail Besth (6) and Hudson Besth (2A) has recently passed away. Please keep them and their family in your prayers. Thank you.
Parent’s Night Out: With the kids back in school, you are probably in need of some well deserved downtime. Well, we have just the answer! Drop off your kids for a night of supervised fun, activities and a movie while you get to enjoy a meal that doesn’t involve cutting up someone’s food for them. Please see the attachment below for more details and note that the deadline for pre-registration (only 50 spots available) is Thursday, January 11, 2018.
Bottle Drive for the Missions: On January15th-18th bring all ‘recyclable-for-money’ containers to the drop-off area from 8:30am - 8:45am. All proceeds support Operation Smile. Thank you for your support!
Professional Development Day: Friday, January 19th is a Professional Development Day for our staff. There is no school for students on this day.
Les jeux Olympiques on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 from 8:50-12pm:
The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea will soon begin. Our anual French Carnaval celebration will be transformed into a winter sport celebration. It will be a festival of cultures, with a highlight on South Korean and French Canadian traditions, Olympic sports and the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and respect. Grade 7 students are designing the stations for the games.
If you would like to earn parent participation hours by helping at the stations, please contact Mme Wiechers. We need help in the kitchen with preparing and serving hot chocolate throughout the games so if you have experience in the Sacred Heart kitchen, we would love to hear from you. Merci.
A Note from the PEC:

Sacred Heart Youth Group News:
On Sunday, January 14, Junior Youth Group will meet in the back of the church. Our focus for the night is: “New Year, New Me?” followed by a cookie making session for a charitable cause.
We invite all grade 7 students to join our weekly activities. Our meeting starts at 6:30pm and is over by 8pm. On occasion we might be using the school gym, so when picking up, please check in there if we are not at the back of the church.
Parents and young adults who would like to assist our activities are welcome to attend. At this point of growing this young community we are at the “it takes a village” stage and we welcome like-minded leaders to help.
SHP Centenary Corner:
January – Vocations Month: What exactly is a “vocation?” What does a priest do? How do I know what God is calling me to do? Why can’t priests get married? For answers to these and other frequently asked questions about the priesthood go to: http://vocationsvancouver.ca/priesthood/faqs/
Vocations Explained: Fr Rodney, Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Vancouver will speak with the children of our school and PREP about Vocations later this month.
