At Sacred Heart, we pride ourselves in providing a variety of extracurricular activities that meet the needs and interests of our students. These clubs are organized by both teachers and parents and we are very thankful for their dedication and time.
From creative activities like Arts & Crafts or Choir, to athletic challenges like lunch-hour Floor Hockey and after school Sports Teams, there are many opportunities to be a part of the school community outside the classroom. Students can even find academic challenges if they wish through clubs like Chess and our two Competitive Reading Clubs.
The Missions Club
This is a very active Club where students learn that we are called to justice and charity by serving others. The Missions Club is involved on the global front with Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org) and Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan's Purse. We also support local organizations and causes, such as the Ladner Food Bank. Students are enthusiastically involved in a wide variety of fundraising and volunteer opportunities, learning along the way to be grateful for the many blessings they have and to reach out to those less fortunate than themselves. Please contact Mrs Lim with inquiries.
Readers Are Leaders (Grades 6 & 7)
This is a reading trivia competition for grade 6 & 7 students. Participants are encouraged to read between 1 to 6 novels that are selected by Librarians in the CISVA. Students begin reading in December, then from January to March they meet once a week to discuss the novels, exchange study questions and discuss strategy.
There will be an in school competition in mid March, followed by a regional competition in April. Winners of this event will compete in a final competition at a selected CISVA school in May.
On competition day, students will work in teams of 6 or 7 to answer 3 rounds of trivia questions about each novel. Each round consists of 12 questions and students have 30 seconds to write down answers to each question.
Reading Link Challenge (Grades 4 & 5)
The Reading Link Challenge is a program organized by the Fraser Valley Regional Library. This opportunity is open to grade 4 and 5 students who are interested in reading for fun, and who would like to participate in a group competition. Students will form teams of 6 or 7 students and each team will be responsible for knowing the contents of six books. Every student is responsible for reading at least one book. Kids get the books in December and read until March. Teams will meet with their team leaders (Mr. Rapier and a parent TBA) once a week to talk strategy and to discuss the books. In early February, all teams at Sacred Heart will compete against each other to answer questions about the books. In late February, the winning team from Sacred Heart will then go to an interschool competition at the Ladner Pioneer Library to compete against other schools in Delta. The winning team of this event will go to the ‘Grand Challenge’ at a location to be announced.
